RDG 90723 by Reading Shops
Class NMf, built 9/27, retired 2/59; to Ironton Railroad #8, to Red Caboose Motel 20
RDG 90723 served on the Ironton Railroad as #8 following its retirement in 1959. It became part of the Red Caboose Motel at Strasburg, Pa. For many years, the motel painted all of their cars red and added a placard with a miscellaneous railroad name. In the 1990s, the motel began painting the cars into representative paint schemes that did not necessarily reflect the true history of the car. In this case, RDG 90723 is decorated for Lehigh Valley.

RDG 92909
Class NMl, built 3/41; to CR 18732 N4, to RCT&HS
Part of the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum collection, RDG 92909 wears a solid green paint job that it never wore in active service. The only real solid green caboose was RDG 92898, which was stationed at the Locomotive Shop in Reading, Pa. 92898 was actually donated to the fledgling RCT&HS in the 1970s, unfortunately the group at the time lacked the resources to take possession of the caboose and it was later scrapped by Conrail.

RED CABOOSE MOTEL 22
Class NMl, built 1941, retired 4/70; to Red Caboose Motel
Red Caboose Motel purchased five examples of Class NMl that had been retired in April, 1970. The numbers were RDG 92880 (built 2/41), RDG 92905, RDG 92913, RDG 92919 and RDG 92923 (all built 3/41). Unfortunately, the original number of each particular motel car cannot be determined. This caboose (unit #22) is painted as Central Railroad of New Jersey. This is unusual in that there are a handful of CNJ cars preserved in other locations that have been painted to impersonate Reading Company cars.
